And I’ll Be Holding On To You: A Review of Twenty-One Pilots in Concert

Hey music lovers,

Sorry it’s been a while. But I am back and ready get back in action. So what better way to start than with concert talk?

21 pilots

A few days ago, I saw Twenty-One Pilots in Rochester, New York. This was easily THE BEST concert I  have ever been to. The opening act Vinyl Theatre matched perfectly with the sound Twenty-One Pilots bring to the stage. For those of you who don’t know who Twenty-One Pilots are, they are an alternative, somewhat electronic sounding band made up of two men, lead man Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun. What is the best about them is these guys brought the house down, and it is just the two of them. They both have so much talent and connect easily with the crowd with their songs and talking with the crowd.

The best part about this concert was a collection of three events. In the middle of the show, a wooden board with  drum set attached to it was held by the crowd, while Dun sat on there and drummed in the crowd for everyone to see. Next, Joseph stood on the crowd’s hands and began singing like crazy, and at the end a different wooden board came out and Joseph banged on the drums as confetti fell from the ceiling. All of these showed that the men were not separated from the crowd, but they were one with the crowd. There is no better feeling than having a band you enjoy listening to you care about you the same way you care about them, and Twenty-One Pilots proved that in concert.

Below are some of the pictures from that night, the night where we all became one. They tell the story better than I could in a million words, so I’ll let them do the talking. If ever you have the chance to see them in concert, go for it! It is well worth it and you will not be disappointed.

So until next time, dance, live, and love music.

Album Review: 5 Seconds of Summer

Hey music lovers,

Need a summer album that is different than the rest? Well I have the perfect one for you! I present to you an Australian boy band that has some serious talent. Want to know more? Read below!

5sos album cover

When listening to this album, I couldn’t help but to fall in love. This is 5 Seconds of Summer, or also known as 5SOS, debut album that has everything in it to be a boy band. The tunes are catchy, lively, and fun to listen to. It’s a good thing that they are on tour with One Direction, because the two boy bands have very similar musical styles, from the chanting in the background, to all members of the band coming together to sing. The best part about this band is that they aren’t afraid to be themselves. By this, I mean that they have fun and live in the moment; whether you listen to their songs, see the making of their music videos, or the music videos themselves. They stay true to themselves, which is always a key aspect when becoming famous “rock stars”.

3sos she looks so perfect making

The band has two Top 40 singles so far off of this album. Their first single “She Looks So Perfect” was a great first single for the band because it hit HUGE. This was the ideal summer song, and the boys released it right at the perfect time. This is a fun song that has catchy lyrics and for me, the guitar in this song really stands out and makes the song what it is. Other songs like this include “Don’t Stop”, which has a potential to be a single, “Good Girls”, “18”, and many others.

5sos amnesia

Their second single is a slower song called “Amnesia” and it is blowing up the charts right now. This song is a brilliant heartbreaking song that you can’t help but keep on repeat. This song has simple instruments in it, making the vocals really stand out and have them make the song extremely strong. This is the kind of song that you would listen to after having your heart ripped out of your body and stomped on the ground; the kind of song that to listen to when you need a good cry. This song has a very “Little Things” feel, but taken in a different direction, making this song the bands own. The song “Never Be” is another slower song that is much like “Amnesia” in the way that it is heartbreaking yet beautiful sounding all at the same time.

5sos social casualty

“Social Casualty” is the kind of song that reminds me of the band “Fall Out Boy”. This song is more on the rock side, with a high-pitched chorus and hard guitar sounds. In this song, the drums really stand out with the blast of the symbols and the mini “solos” that are in the background of the vocals. I really enjoy this because 5SOS is taking a chance in this song and aren’t afraid to be different in their musical style. Another song like this is “Voodoo Doll”, with the same style of rock instruments, however, the pitch is constant, meaning that the boys don’t raise into a different octave during this song.

5sos photo

Overall, this album is a great one to listen to. If you are a One Direction fanatic, then you will fall in love with 5SOS. And even if you aren’t and are looking for something new to listen to, then this album is the go-to album. Rate: 4/5

So until next time, dance, live, and love music.

Repeat Mode

Hey music lovers,

Have you ever found a song that you just can’t help but to play it on repeat until the sun goes down? Or have a song that is stuck in your head all the time? Below are the top songs that define a specific mood; songs that can be your “go tos” so that you can blare it in your speakers or rock your headphones to it.

amnesia 5sos

Heartbreak- 5 Seconds of Summer- “Amnesia”. This song I have had on repeat for a while (even though I am not heartbroken…) but it brings you back to your past. Sometimes we wish we could forget the pain someone has caused us and move on, but pain is part of growing up, growing stronger. Without pain, we wouldn’t be as strong as we are, and sometimes you need to let the pain out. It’s okay to cry! Because in the end, we feel so much better and are able to do the toughest thing we have ever had to do: move on.

colbie try

Girl Power- Colbie Caillat- “Try”. In this song, Caillat stands up to the society’s norms. Society has structured woman so that beauty is everything. Society has come to believe that it’s the makeup you wear, the clothes you buy, what shape your body is, how much skin you show on a Friday night out so that you will be liked. What society fails to realize is that beauty is seen not only on the outside, but within. Anyone has the right to do what they want to their body, and society does not have a say about that. You want a tattoo? Get one. You want to dye your hair bright pink? Why not! You are the judge of your body, and you should look the way you want without society telling you how to be beautiful. You already are. If you love yourself, you are beautiful, and what you think is all that matters.

jason trumpets

Arousing But Fun- Jason Derulo- “Trumpets”. Just the instruments and the beat alone will have you rockin’ to this for hours on end (and trust me, it’s a song you won’t stop singing and humming to). This song is not only catchy from it’s instruments, but from it’s lyrics as well. Derulo sings about other artists. For example, he uses the lines, “your bra reminds me of a Katy Perry” or “your eyes remind me of a Coldplay song”. Hearing how he uses these artists is really interesting and fun to listen to.

boom clap

New Love– Charli XCX- “Boom Clap”. Not only is this song from the infamous movie “The Fault in Our Stars”, but it has been hitting HUGE all over the nation. This song is catchy with a basic base and pop out lyrics that just tug at your heart strings. This song is about how you feel when you are around someone you are attracted to. Your heart tends to speed up and that is what Charli XCX is talking about.

Pump Up– Iggy Azalea- “Fancy”. “First things first…” This song is not only blasting to the top of the charts, but so is her latest single “Black Widow”. However this song is all about the pump up, the power, with the kick-ass beat where you want to sassily snap your fingers to. This song will not only put you in a good mood, but you’ll be feeling like a rock-star all day and all night long.

Happy- The Clash “Should I Stay or Should I Go”. A classic throwback that is a sure guarantee to put a smile on your face. Instead of choosing the cheap way out and choosing Pharrell Williams’ “happy”, a throwback song always puts you in a happy mood. Not only is this song a song that you will groove to, it’s a song you can rock out to in the office without getting in trouble with your boss. And if you do, just ask “Should I stay or should I go now” (and hopefully they will let you stay).

Of course these are only a few songs that are out there for any mood you are feeling. So grab your tub of ice cream and blare 5 Seconds of Summer, or snag your hairbrush and jump on your bed while listening to The Clash. Whoever and whatever song you choose that fits your mood is the song that speaks to you, and you should run with it.

So until next time, dance, live, and love music.

Have You Done YOUR Bucket List Yet?

summer blog 1

Hey music lovers,

As summer is drawing to an end, we realize how much stuff we still have to do. We promised ourselves to cross things off our bucket lists but realize the time is slipping slowly from our hands. Fear not though. As you know, summer is only halfway over, so we still have half a summer to work with.

Below is a simple bucket list; a bucket list that I want you to do for you. Some are easy to cross off while others are a challenge. So, without further ado, let us begin.

10. SleepThis is such a simple task that sometimes it is difficult to do. During the busy times we only get 3-4 hours of sleep a night, but now is the time to “catch up”. give yourself a few more hours this summer, but don’t waste your summer away by hitting the snooze button every half hour. Having trouble sleeping? Put together a sleep playlist to listen to when you are trying to sleep. Slow songs are ideal, such as Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well”, “I’ll Be” by Edwin McCane, and John Mayer’s “Why Georgia”.

9. Read A Book. Sometimes those summer nights can get lonesome, or you’re stuck inside on a rainy day. Instead of wasting your brain cells on endless Netflix series, such as Orange is the New Black, pick up a book and adventure off somewhere new and exciting. Before you know it, you’ll be engulfed in TFIOS, the Divergent series, or even “Just Listen”, one of my personal favorites. Music can help you concentrate when you read, and classical music is the route to go.

create art

8. Create A Piece of Art. For you non-artistic people out there, this could be somewhat of a challenge. However, there are some easy art pieces you can do. You can do sidewalk chalk, crayon art, and even just splatter paint a canvas. You could also sketch a person or piece of nature, create music, whatever your heart desires! As long as you have fun with it, nothing else matters. When I work on a piece of art, I tend to listen to Rock and Roll music like Bon Jovi, the Beatles, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, and so much more. Whatever music gets you in the creative mindset, go for it!

7. Go to the Beach.  But only when it’s open (thanks to a friend, it was okay for us to go on). This sounds like a no-brainer, but I have YET to lay on the beach this year. Yes I have stepped foot on the cool sand, but never spent a full day there. It’s time to grab your shades, sunscreen, and beach ball for a relaxing day in the summer sun. My go-to pump up beach song is 100% Nicki Minaj’s “Starships”, along with some country summer classics from Brad Paisley, Florida Georgia Line, Jake Owen, Luke Bryan, and more. Shake your tail feathers and enjoy your beach (and killer tan)!

ice cream

6. Eat Some Ice Cream. There is no better time to treat yourself to something than in the summer. All your favorite ice cream parlors open back up for business! And, let’s be honest, there are copious amounts of flavors to choose from, it’s irresistible. From Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl to Strawberry Cheesecake, to Classic Coffee, they are all to die for. And the perfect summer dates are always the ice cream dates. Whenever you get ice cream, you can’t help but sing “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!”

spur the moment blog

5. Spur the Moment.  Thankfully, I have already done this one and can cross this off my list. I had this problem early in the summer where I couldn’t sleep. I looked out my window and saw the sun coming up, and realized it was about 4:30. So, instead of being restless for even longer, I grabbed my jacket and my keys, the my hair in a bun and went on an adventure. I ended up driving to Lake Ontario and watching the sun rise over the water. This was on my bucket list for a while, and I was so happy to finally cross it off. It wasn’t planned, and it was worth staying up for. In your spur the moment adventure, choose a spur the moment playlist. I think by putting your phone or iPod on shuffle is the perfect way to begin your moment. Choose a song you are in the mood for, and don’t settle. This is your moment, and it can be captured by the music you choose to play.

4. Go to A Mom & Pop Restaurant.  This is where you find THE BEST FOOD EVER! And I mean that. Every time I go back home, I always have a bagel at Lox of Bagels. This isn’t a chain restaurant, but a good place to go, converse with friends or family, and have homemade bagels. Non-chain restaurants are the way to go, and I’m sure you will find delicious food along the way. For this, I wouldn’t choose your playlist, have the restaurant choose it for you! Some like the radio, others have mixed CDs. Either way, there is always something new you’ll hear (and probably eat) while you are there.

sleepy face

*These are our morning faces…*

3. Make A Day Full of Pictures.  From the moment you wake up until the moment you (almost) fall asleep, take pictures that excite yo. It could be a picture of your morning face with your pet, or the food you ate at lunch, or you and your friends. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so why not make a day of it? The first song that comes to mind is Nickleback’s “Photograph”, and how one day you will look at the pictures, smile, laugh, and reminisce to the “good ‘ol days”.

fenway park

2. Go On An Adventure. This is kind of like a spur the moment, but this one is planned out. Plan on doing something you haven’t done before, or you haven’t done by yourself before. I have an adventure coming up with my brother. We are taking a day trip somewhere, whether it be to Albany, New York City, or to Boston. No matter where we go, we will make the best of it. For your adventure, create a Roadtrip 2014 CD between you and your pals by choosing songs that you all enjoy, and of course adding a few classics like “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman, or “500 Miles” by The Proclaimers, and even R. Kelly’s “Ignition (Remix)”. As long as you have fun with it, that’s all that matters.

happiness is small

1. Find Your Happiness. For some people, the little things in life make them happy. For others, it’s a struggle to find happiness in their lives. Sometimes it’s living in the moment, other times it’s finding summer romance, and it can even be to be reunited with someone. Once you have found your happiness, hold onto it. If you are unhappy, change it. This is YOUR life, and YOU deserve to be happy. The only person who can do that, is you. Don’t be afraid to discover who you really are in life, and never be afraid to take a chance. Once you find true happiness, you’ll never want to lose that. A song that makes you feel alive, strong, and happy is Imagine Dragon’s “On Top of the World”. It’s one that will make you smile and feel like you can do anything if you set your mind to it.

So what are you waiting for? You only have half of the summer left, and it’s time to get crackin’! Good luck on your adventures, and be sure to cross everything off your summer bucket list.

Until next time, dance, live, and love music.

Need A Playlist?

Hey music lovers,

As the weekend winds down, you can’t help but to plug in your music to a slower, more relaxing playlist. You strive for a playlist that not only speaks to you, but makes you feel at ease after a long day in the sun. Need help figuring what to put on there? Don’t worry, I have your back.

10. R. Kelly- “Ignition”. Even though this is a song for the beginning of the weekend, you can’t help but think about the weekend and reflect on the fun you had. This is a song that you can bop your head to, and you can’t help but smile when you hear this song. Don’t worry, it is “hot and fresh out the kitchen”.

9. Tracy Chapman-“Fast Car”. Need a getaway song? Then this is your jam. Not only is this a classic, but it’s a song that makes you wanna go fast, breathe in the smell of a freshly cut lawn, or the salty sea water. This song makes you feel more aware and alive. It’s the perfect song to end off the weekend with.

8. Jason Mraz-“Love Someone”. This song is all about love and what it feels like to be in love. If you’re in love, you know what Mraz is talking about. It’s one of those songs that just make sense when you’re in love; that describes everything you are feeling in one, simple song. Why not end the weekend on a happy note?

7. O.A.R.- “Peace”. This is a beautiful song that makes the acoustic guitar really stand out. The build up to this song is really powerful up until the end. The first time you hear it, you will be obsessed with it. The song is about making up after a fight, and creating peace after the storm. This song is about looking up, and after the weekend, you’re going to need some looking up for the work week to come.

6. Taylor Swift- “Drops of Jupiter”. Yes, I did say Taylor Swift and not Train. If you haven’t heard this cover, you must. Swift performs this song beautifully, making this song acoustic, which allows her voice to really stand out and make the song what it truly is. It’s a quirky song with it’s “deep fried chicken”, but adorable all at the same time.

5. John Lennon-“Imagine”. This song allows you to close your eyes and relax. Even though the lyrics to this song is a bit on the darker side, the sound of the piano and the steady, soft beat of the drums makes this song so calm and soothing. The song is about seeing the world changed so that everyone comes together and there is peace. No wars, no fights, no conflicts, just peace. This song will let you find your inner peace after a long weekend in order to be happy and to “be a dreamer”.

4. Sara Bareilles-“I Choose You”. Yet another love song, however, this one is the blossoming of love between two people and realizing you are in love with them. It’s like the first snow of the winter, the first color-change of the leaves in fall. It’s the exciting feeling you get in your stomach you get when you find that one person. That person you are meant to be with; the beginning of the rest of your life with your lobster. The sound of this song is relaxing and exciting, much like it is when you look back on the weekend and see all you have accomplished.

3. Birdy- “Tee Shirt”. This is a slow song about waking up the next morning after a night full of dreams and desires. Not only is this song about love (shocking, I know), but it’s about waking up with the one you love. Waking up to their smell, to what they wear, listening to their scratchy voice and never forgetting this. This song is absolutely beautiful and fits right into “The Fault In Our Stars” movie and soundtrack perfectly.

2. Coldplay- “Yellow”. Of course no playlist is complete without Coldplay. When I hear this song, I imagine laying on a Mexican blanket in the grass, having a soft playlist on, and staring up at the stars. The stars are a beautiful thing, we make wishes on them as if they are actually going to come true, they light up our gardens in the darkest of nights. Stars have a lot of power, including the power to name one after a loved one.

1. A Great Big World- “Already Home”. The latest hit from A Great Big World that is absolutely beautiful. It’s about not giving up on your other half, no matter how far the distance is. It’s difficult, yes, but in the end, it’s rewarding. You find your home in life, no matter where you are in this world. When in love, you have found your home.

A relaxing playlist for your calm, breezy night. With these songs, it’s an excuse to have your music on “repeat” until you drift into a deep slumber. Happy listening!

So until next time, dance, live, and love music.

Album Review: O.A.R.’s “The Rockville” LP

the rockville oar blog

Hey music lovers,

As summer comes to halfway over, it’s time to freshen things up a bit. However, it is important to remember your roots and where you came from, and this album does jus that. So without further adu, here is the latest scoop from O.A.R.’s latest “The Rockville” LP.

This album is one that you are going to want to listen to. Why? Because O.A.R. is back with all new sounds intertwined with their originality of music. My favorite song off this album is their latest single ‘Peace”. This song is a slow song that is absolutely beautiful. It’s has the sound of the guitar making a huge impact about going after what you love and finally getting the peace they’ve been seeking for.

Another knockout song is “Two Hands Up”. This is the first song off of their album that is upbeat and really defines the album as a whole. O.A.R. keeps with themselves, but add techno music in their originality. A song similar to this style is “We’ll Pick Up Where We Left Off”, which is the second song off their album. It is upbeat and lively; full of energy and life.

However, O.A.R. fails to leave who they are behind, which makes this album even more powerful. “The Element” brings the band back to the start and where it all began; almost like a reminder to how things started. I really like this because the band knows who they are, and you can tell that even though times in the music industry are changing, O.A.R. adapts to some of the latest sounds, but this song incorporates the music in which they already are.

Another song that is like “The Element” is “Favorite Song” this is a cute love song, much like “Peace” but more upbeat and fun sounding. This song is about love and singing to the songs that make sense now that you’re in love. Another song like this is “So Good So Far”. This song is beautiful with the instruments used and the lyrics that combine with it. It’s about living in the moment and learning that so far, things are going good, but it isn’t over until you’ve won, meaning winning the guy or the girl’s heart forever.

A song that I’m not a huge fan of off this album is “The Architect”. I can’t tell if it’s the trumpets being used, or the edginess it has. I feel like the mix between the instruments and the lyrics don’t connect well together, and that if one of them were different, maybe the song would be a lot stronger.

Overall, I highly recommend this album to O.A.R. lovers and for people who love artists such as the Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox Twenty, and 90s music in general. I can see this band going far in the future, as long as they stick to who they are.

So until next time, dance, live, and love music.

Album Review: Coldplay’s “Ghost Stories”

Hey music lovers,

Ever wonder what albums are worth listening to? I have one that I’ve been DYING to share with you.

This is by far one of Coldplay’s best albums. What I love about this album is that it adds new sounds to the old Coldplay sound they have to create something new. Coldplay relies on new technology in this album, with some upbeat songs, along with slow, smooth-sounding songs.

The album opens up with the song “Always In My Head”. I wouldn’t expect this song to lead the album off, because I thought that the band would choose a more upbeat song, to enter in with a “BANG” effect. However, I really like this song because of the lyrics. It reminds me of when you are in love; how you think of someone constantly, and you can’t sleep because of it. The second song of the album is the first single called “Magic”. This song I cannot get out of my head, mostly because of the beat and the lyrics. Again, a song about love and how it sparks up the magic between two people. If you don’t believe in magic, you will after listening to this song.

“A Sky Full of Stars” is Coldplay’s second and latest single off the album. This song incorporates a lot of new sounds, creating more of a dubstep sound that is upbeat and is one that you can dance to. I like this song because it’s still Coldplay, but on an all-new level. I can see this song getting big, because it is memorable and exciting to listen to.

A song that I can see being a potential single is the song “Ink”. This song adds new bongo sounds with the guitar playing a major role. This song is a little slower than “A Sky Full of Stars”, however, it is a love song about being lost into someone permanently, like ink. Both of them last forever, and there is no going back, so by having this analogy, it makes the song very strong and enjoyable to listen to.

One song that I could live without is the song ‘True Love”. This isn’t a bad song, but it is a very slow song. This song is one that puts me to sleep; yet it is beautiful all at the same time. Lead singer Chris Martin really makes this song what it is with his vocals. Martin expands his vocals on so many levels in this song, reaching the high pitches very well. For me, it is just too slow, and I feel like if the beat was a little faster, then the song would stand out to me more.

Overall, this is a fantastic album to listen to. You listen to it once, and you’re hooked. I would recommend this album to anyone who is a Coldplay fanatic, and even if you aren’t one, you will be one after you give “Ghost Stories” a listen.

So until next time, dance, live, and love music.
